信心就是胜利
叶慈 John Henry Yates
叶慈（John Henry Yates, 1837-1900）生於纽约州巴塔邑（Batavia），一生很少离开本乡，也埋葬在那里。但他的诗歌，卻在远方有人唱诵。
叶慈绝不像会成为圣诗作家的人。他只读过本地的中学，在十八岁的时候，就得辍学作工，仰事父母。他作过不同的工作，推销过鞋，作过店员，商店经理等。
但他勤於读书，写作。二十岁，母亲鼓励他把所写的诗歌结集出版，居然相当成功，全国各地都有人购读。
二十一岁时，叶慈得卫理公会巡回讲道许可。
1886年，巴塔邑进步报（Progressive Batavian）知道叶慈的文名，约他担任编辑。他作了约十年。那是一份地方性週刊，创立於1868年。
1890年，自由意志浸信会（Free-Will Baptist Church）的西伯大尼堂（West Bethany），邀叶慈负责教会牧职。可能是因为他仍任编辑，不能摆脫，服事教会约七年之后，巴塔邑进步报停刊，年登花甲的叶慈，才接受按立为牧师。
散契 Ira David Sankey
1891年，歌唱佈道家散契（Ira David Sankey, 1840-1908），约请叶慈牧师为他作圣歌词，其中包括“信心就是胜利”，成为“福音诗歌”的经典之作。叶慈所作的圣诗，约二十余首，这诗最为基督徒所熟知。这个平凡的人，既未能行万里路，也沒有机会读万卷书，但他肯献上自己所有的，使他的笔为主使用。
诗歌取意於约翰壹书第五章4节经文：
因为凡从神生的，就胜过世界；
使我们胜了世界的，就是我们的信心。
1900年，叶慈牧师逝世。
